- Go to the top menu bar where the Apple logo is and click on “Finder.”. Select “Preferences,” and you will see four tabs on the top. Tick “External disks” under “General” and “Sidebar” tabs. Then the MacBook is set up to show up the external hard drive on the desktop and in the Finder.
- Many times, poor connection will make the Mac/MacBook not recognize the external hard drive. Make sure the connection is clean and firm. Wipe the USB port with a clean and dry towel to get rid of any dust or other material. Use another USB port/cable/hub/adapter. Reboot the Mac/MacBook to refresh all USB ports.
Hey guys and gals,
I had my HD take a fall, as in it won't recognized the main hard drive.
So I can boot up from the USB drive via a backup copy of Mac OS, and all my own audio files are on an external HD.
The only thing on this was of course Mac OS, Logic X, MainStage 3, and some downloaded music files in iTunes.
I assumed it to be a crashed hard drive, and ordered a new Crucial MX500 SSD, and though the connectors are the same, and both old and new drives state they are SATA, not SATA-3, after installing the new drive, and booting up from the USB Mac OS boot, the system doesn't recognize the new drive either.
I never had this problem with my iMac, after installing a new SDD, the system recognized the drive, and allowed me to format it for Mac OS, then onto installing and updating the drive as usual.
A lot of people have to replace the cable to the hard drive inside these MacBook Pro A1278's, but I didn't do that yet.
QUESTIONS:
Have any of you guys replaced the cable, and still NOT have the drive recognized?
If so, what manufacturer of drive did you replace for the OEM drive?
I'm thinking that its just the HD cable, but I don't want to go about replacing everything without entertaining that the actual SSD might be incompatible with these small MacBooks, though I did a serial number search, and got the EXACT model number with specs at Macfind.
Other people have had success with this, though some complain that the larger terabyte plus SDD drives have had problems, though they tended to be Samsung drives, not Crucial.
